Efficient signal processing is a key aspect in several different application areas of digital design. For example, within the scope of mobile communication, there is a steady growth of subscribers, which will lead to a significant
ly higher amount of payload and transceiver activity. In order to achieve satisfying results regarding throughput and energy-efficiency, approximate computing has proven to be a promising approach in a vast number of applications.


ITEM's 
research focuses on the automated generation of high-performance digital signal processing modules of non-trivia elementary functions. Thus, the integration into the common EDA-flow requires, on the one hand, the generation of optimized HDL-based function approximations, e.g. by efficient heuristics. On the other hand, performance validation is performed by embedding the generated hardware modules into existing applications.
